Recovery from addiction

30 Years Clean & Sober: My Gratitude Speaks

On July 18, 2017, just a few days from now, I will be celebrating 30 years of continued recovery—primarily from prescription pills and pot. As I look back on these years, what I know for sure is that I definitely feel as if I’ve been born again within this one lifetime. So how did this happen? Truly, when I first started my recovery from addiction, if anyone had told me that I would someday have 30 years, I would have told them they were crazy. I couldn’t see past my own nose, at that point. … [Read more...] about 30 Years Clean & Sober: My Gratitude Speaks

Life Begins at the End of Your Comfort Zone: Recovery from Addictive Behaviors

This post was originally published in June of 2013. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone—so true. I love this saying, and wish I could take credit for thinking it up. In my humble opinion, whoever came up with it is a genius—and when I saw it on a fridge magnet many years ago, I bought several of them to give as gifts to people I recognized as being entrenched in their comfort zones. (Sometimes it really does take one to know one.) Having given most of them away, I am now down to just … [Read more...] about Life Begins at the End of Your Comfort Zone: Recovery from Addictive Behaviors

New Year’s Resolutions? Try Intentions Instead!

Originally posted in December 2010In the immortal words of John Lennon, another year is over and a new one’s just begun.Isn’t it interesting how we, as a society, agree that this is the time to give ourselves and our lives a complete and total new makeover? We have decided that at this time of the year we will revisit the year we’re leaving behind, dissecting it to see what worked for us and what didn’t. And on top of that, we need to make sure that we meet all of our “resolutions” quickly and … [Read more...] about New Year’s Resolutions? Try Intentions Instead!

Addiction and Recovery: What Do Addicts REALLY Need?

Whenever I hear clients repeating themselves in our therapy sessions, I take notice.Their repetition alerts me that something is really important to them. Sometimes they’ll tell me the same story more than once, other times they will ask the same questions a few times. In other cases, they will repeat words—especially when they are striving to let me know how they feel.So when I began receiving emails this past week from both colleagues and clients containing the same link to the same TED talk … [Read more...] about Addiction and Recovery: What Do Addicts REALLY Need?

Robin Williams, Dead at 63: Words No One Ever Wanted to Hear

“Robin Williams: Dead, Apparent Suicide”   How could this happen? We are asking ourselves this question today as we shake our heads in disbelief. Robin Williams, the uproariously funny comedian, dead? Apparent suicide? How can this be??Yes, we all knew he had problems with addiction—he’d bravely allowed that to be common knowledge, probably in the hope that his struggle could also help others. He carried the message in the true spirit of one who was walking the walk of addiction recovery, and I … [Read more...] about Robin Williams, Dead at 63: Words No One Ever Wanted to Hear
